Tone/Mood

The tone of The Handmaid’s Tale is often dark and depressing.  With the totalitarian state of Gilead, all aspects of life is controlled by the government. The characters have lost their freedom and live miserable lives, especially women.  Handmaid Offred is becomes an object used only for giving birth. She is constantly unhappy with her life and often reminisces of her life before Gilead, when women were not treated as mere animals and had freedom.
